Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina offers India to use Chittagong port, says both countries will have to increase connectivity

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited Indian Foreign Minister S. During the meeting with Jaishankar, India has proposed to use its Chittagong port for the northeastern states of Assam and Tripura to enhance connectivity between the two countries. External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, who arrived here on a brief official visit, extended an invitation to Sheikh Hasina to visit New Delhi on behalf of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

Jaishankar tweeted 'Thank you Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her warm welcome. I congratulated him on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under the guidance of both the leaders, our bilateral relations are progressing strongly.” During the meeting, Prime Minister Hasina said that the two countries will have to further enhance connectivity.

 

Northeast states will benefit from the Chittagong port

 

Hasina's press secretary Ehsanul Karim said the Bangladesh PM told Jaishankar that India's northeastern region would particularly benefit from using Bangladesh's southeast Chittagong port. The Bangladesh Prime Minister said that the initiative was taken to restart the cross-border routes between Bangladesh and India. This work was stopped during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. At that time Bangladesh was part of Pakistan and was known as East Pakistan.

 

Discussion on many bilateral and international issues

 

Karim said several bilateral and international issues were discussed during Prime Minister Hasina's more than half-hour-long meeting with Jaishankar. Jaishankar later held talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart AK Abdul Momen and then jointly briefed the media. According to a tweet by the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry, the two foreign ministers expressed satisfaction about the Bangladesh-India cooperation. Jaishankar, who arrived here earlier, was received by Foreign Minister Momen at Bangladesh Air Force Base Bangabandhu.
