Hundreds of Bangladeshi nationals gathered at the international border with India in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Wednesday and claimed that they were being attacked in their country. Officials said the incident took place near South Berubari village in the Jhaportla border outpost area. They said the paramilitary force Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) later took them back.

They said these people belonged to five villages in Bangladesh's Panchagarh district which borders Jalpaiguri. A Border Security Force (BSF) official said Bangladeshis had gathered at the border but no one could enter India as the border was completely sealed. Later, the BGB took them back.

More than 100 stopped

Officials said BSF field commanders contacted their counterparts of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and this group of 120-140 people, accompanied by women and children, was stopped and asked to go back. Officials said that the situation on the border is under control.

The BSF protects 932.39 km of the 4,096 km long India-Bangladesh international border including North Dinajpur, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar districts of West Bengal.
