His grandson Shantanu Mukherjee had filed a complaint against director Vivek Agnihotri, accusing him of distorting facts.

Shashwat Chatterjee said in a recent interview to The Wall that he is not a historian to comment on whether a film is misinterpreting history or not. He said, 'I am just an actor. I liked a character and I played it. I am not a historian to think about history and this is distorting history. This is not my job. If those whose job it is, feel that Bengal is being insulted, then they can go to court with the information. There is no point in just making noise'.
