The delta variant of the coronavirus is the most prevalent variant of this virus worldwide. It is leaving behind alpha, beta, and gamma variants in terms of spread and infection. This was stated by Maria van Kirkhove, Technical Lead of the World Health Organization (WHO) at an event on Wednesday.
He said the delta variant has changed over time and become more contagious. Currently, it is actively surpassing all variants of the coronavirus in terms of spread. "Currently less than one percent of the alpha, beta, and gamma variants are circulating," Kirkhov said in a social media briefing.
He said it has become more powerful, it is more contagious and it is taking the place of other variants. It is noteworthy that WHO has lowered the alpha, beta, gamma along with eta, iota, and kappa variants. This means that these variants are no longer a serious threat to global public health.
