Lucknow, Jan 20 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested a member of Dawood Ibrahim's gang in Mumbai, an official said Tuesday.
In a joint operation carried out by a team of Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Lucknow police, the Dawood gang member, Tariq Parveen, was arrested from Mumbai late Monday after a tip-off.
Lucknow Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Yashashwi Yadav said the Special Task Force (STF) had arrested Azeez-ud-din, a Pune resident, and Aqeel Ahmed of Lucknow in 1999 with a major consignment of arms and ammunition that included an AK-47 and 96 live cartridges.
However, Parveen later gave police a slip and managed to escape to Mumbai.
He was the person who had procured the arms from Nepal to kill a former Mumbai mayor, Yadav said.
The ATS and Lucknow police were asked to take up the matter by Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police A.K. Gupta. The team then went to Mumbai and was tipped off that Parveen had started a real estate business.
He was arrested Monday.
He told the police team that he fled to Dubai but was deported back to India in 2004. He also admitted that he worked for underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
