E10 Petrol: E10 petrol to return for older vehicles; why is the government considering offering this option alongside E20?

Posted on 20th Aug 2026 11:04 am by rohit kumar

The central government is considering whether E10 petrol should be made available for older vehicles alongside E20 petrol, amid growing concerns from vehicle owners about the compatibility of higher ethanol-blended fuel.

Discussions with oil companies have reportedly begun following a suggestion from Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran. However, the proposal remains at an early stage, and no final decision has been taken to reintroduce E10 petrol.

Why Is the Government Considering E10 Petrol Again?

India achieved its target of blending 20% ethanol into petrol ahead of schedule, following which E20 petrol became the primary fuel option in the country.

However, owners of older cars, motorcycles and scooters have raised concerns about using E20 in vehicles that were not designed for higher ethanol blends. Some motorists have reported concerns over fuel efficiency, mileage and compatibility with older engine components.

Against this backdrop, the possibility of bringing back E10 petrol is being examined, particularly for vehicles manufactured before E20 compatibility became standard.

What Is the Main Challenge in Offering E10 and E20 Together?

The biggest hurdle is not the production of E10 petrol but the fuel storage, transportation and distribution infrastructure required to supply two different petrol grades.

If E10 and E20 were sold simultaneously, petrol stations would need separate arrangements to store and dispense the two fuels. The transportation and distribution network would also have to ensure that the different blends remain properly segregated.

The government has previously highlighted the additional cost and logistical complexity involved in providing multiple petrol grades across the country.

Could E10 Petrol Help Older Vehicles?

Lower-ethanol fuel such as E10 could provide an alternative for older vehicles that were not designed to operate on higher ethanol blends.

Officials are examining concerns related to reduced mileage and fuel compatibility. However, the exact scope of any potential E10 rollout—including whether it would be available nationwide or only at selected petrol pumps—has not yet been determined.

Has the Government Decided to Bring Back E10 Petrol?

No. The government has not taken a final decision to reintroduce E10 petrol.

The discussions are currently preliminary and focus on whether a separate E10 supply can be created for older vehicles without creating excessive costs and logistical complications.

The issue gained renewed attention after Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran called for E10 petrol to remain available for older two-wheelers. The government is now examining whether such an option can be practically implemented.

E10 vs E20 Petrol: What Is the Difference?

E10 petrol contains up to 10% ethanol, while E20 petrol contains up to 20% ethanol blended with petrol.

The higher ethanol blend is part of India's strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, increase the use of domestically produced ethanol and support energy security.

However, the transition also raises questions about the compatibility of older vehicles and the infrastructure required to supply different fuel blends.

What Happens Next?

The government is expected to continue discussions with oil marketing companies and other stakeholders before deciding whether E10 should return to the market.

For now, motorists should not assume that E10 petrol is being officially relaunched. Any nationwide reintroduction would require a formal government decision and details regarding availability, pricing and distribution.
