Former Australia cricketer David Warner has been convicted of mid-range drink-driving in Sydney. The Waverley Local Court imposed a A$1,500 fine and ordered that an alcohol interlock device be fitted to his vehicle for 12 months.
The 39-year-old former opener pleaded guilty to the offence last month after recording a blood-alcohol reading of 0.104 during a random roadside breath test in Sydney on Easter Sunday. The reading was more than twice Australia\'s standard legal limit of 0.05.
David Warner Fined A$1,500 by Sydney Court
Warner appeared before Waverley Local Court, where he was fined A$1,500 over the drink-driving offence.
The court heard that Warner had consumed three glasses of white wine before getting behind the wheel. When he noticed a roadside breath-testing operation, he stopped and attempted to swap seats with a female passenger, according to the information presented to the court.
Warner had already pleaded guilty to the charge.
Alcohol Interlock Device Ordered for 12 Months
Alongside the financial penalty, the court ordered Warner\'s vehicle to be fitted with an ignition interlock device for 12 months.
The device requires the driver to provide a breath sample before starting the vehicle. If alcohol above the permitted threshold is detected, the vehicle\'s engine will not start.
Some interlock systems can also require additional breath tests while the vehicle is being driven.
Magistrate Claire Farnan reportedly said Warner was unlikely to reoffend but stressed the serious consequences of drink-driving, which remains a significant contributor to road accidents in New South Wales.
Warner Recorded 0.104 Blood-Alcohol Reading
Warner\'s roadside test produced a reading of 0.104, substantially above Australia\'s standard legal limit of 0.05 for drivers.
The result formed the basis of the mid-range drink-driving charge to which Warner pleaded guilty.
An alcohol breath test estimates blood-alcohol concentration by measuring alcohol present in a person\'s breath.
Warner Retired From International Cricket in 2024
David Warner retired from international cricket in 2024 after an career with Australia.
He played 112 Test matches and more than 250 international limited-overs matches for the country. Following his international retirement, Warner has remained active through commentary and franchise cricket.
He is also associated with the Sydney Thunder and has played in overseas T20 competitions.
Cricket NSW Says It Is Taking the Matter Seriously
Warner\'s drink-driving case has also drawn attention because Sydney Thunder is associated with a New South Wales government road-safety campaign focused on preventing drink-driving.
Cricket NSW said it supports safe driving and is taking the matter seriously.
Warner\'s lawyer, Awais Ahmed, also told the court that international media coverage of the incident had caused additional harm to the former Australian star and could affect future commercial opportunities.
What Is an Ignition Interlock Device?
An ignition interlock is a breath-testing device connected to a vehicle\'s starting system.
The driver must blow into the device before starting the car. If alcohol is detected above the programmed limit, the vehicle will not start.
The system is designed to prevent a person who has been drinking from driving the vehicle.
What Does a 0.104 Reading Mean?
Australia\'s standard legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.05. Warner\'s reported reading of 0.104 was therefore more than double that limit.
The legal consequences of drink-driving can vary depending on the jurisdiction, alcohol reading and circumstances of the offence.
