Apple has released a new security-focused software update for iPhone and iPad users. The company has rolled out iOS 26.6.1 and iPadOS 26.6.1, along with macOS Tahoe 26.6.2, addressing multiple security vulnerabilities.

The update was released on August 17, 2026, and Apple is urging users to install the latest software to ensure their devices remain protected against potential security threats.

iOS 26.6.1 Update: 29 Security Issues Fixed

According to Apple's security documentation, iOS 26.6.1 and iPadOS 26.6.1 include 29 security fixes, with a significant portion related to WebKit.

The update is primarily focused on security rather than new features. Several vulnerabilities could potentially allow malicious apps or specially crafted content to access sensitive information, cause crashes, or execute arbitrary code.

Apple has also incorporated some security improvements that were previously available in beta versions of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27.

WebKit Accounts for Most of the Fixes

WebKit, the browser engine used by Safari and other Apple technologies, received extensive attention in this update.

Apple has addressed 21 WebKit-related vulnerabilities, including issues involving memory corruption and unexpected application or browser crashes. Some of these vulnerabilities could potentially be exploited through malicious web content.

According to the security information, OpenAI Codex Security identified nine of the vulnerabilities addressed in the update.

Audio and Image Vulnerabilities Also Fixed

Apple has patched vulnerabilities affecting audio and image processing.

One audio-related flaw could potentially allow an application to expose sensitive user information. Another image-processing vulnerability could enable arbitrary code execution under certain circumstances.

The update also includes fixes for several kernel-level security issues.

Critical Telephony Vulnerability Patched

One of the more serious issues addressed by Apple involves the iPhone's telephony functionality.

Under specific network conditions, the vulnerability could potentially allow an attacker to bypass IPSec authentication, intercept network traffic, and access sensitive information.

Apple has now patched the issue as part of the latest security release.

Importantly, Apple says it has not received reports indicating that these vulnerabilities have been actively exploited.

Older iPhones Also Receive Security Updates.

Apple has not forgotten devices that cannot upgrade to the latest iOS 26 release.

The company has released iOS 18.7.10 and iPadOS 18.7.10 for compatible older devices, providing them with important security fixes.

This is particularly relevant for users who cannot install iOS 26 but still want to keep their devices protected.

How to Download iOS 26.6.1

iPhone users can check for the update by following these steps:

Settings → General → Software Update

If iOS 26.6.1 is available for your device, select Download and Install and follow the on-screen instructions.

It is recommended to keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and have sufficient battery power or connect it to a charger before starting the installation.

No Major New Features in iOS 26.6.1

Unlike a major iOS release, iOS 26.6.1 is primarily a security update. Users should not expect significant new features or major interface changes.

Apple is expected to introduce its next major generation of software, iOS 27, in the coming weeks. Until then, installing iOS 26.6.1 is an important step for users who want to keep their iPhones protected.
