Today is the martyrdom day (death anniversary) of Guru Teg Bahadur. He was the ninth Guru of the Sikhs, who even after 400 years is known as the 'Chadar of Hind'. Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed himself to protect Hinduism and Kashmiri Pandits. Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed himself to protect Hinduism. In 1675, Mughal ruler Aurangzeb beheaded him in front of everyone for not accepting Islam, but Aurangzeb could not bow his head.

The ninth Guru of the Sikhs had sacrificed his life to protect Hinduism.

Today, where bigotry is seen in the name of religion, in the 16th century, Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed himself to protect Hinduism. When Kashmiri Pandits sought Guru Tegh Bahadur's help, he did not hesitate. Hindus told that the Mughals are torturing them a lot, they are pressurizing them to convert. Then Guru Teg Bahadur said, go tell Aurangzeb that first, he should convert me, only after that he can convert someone else's religion. After this Guru Tegh Bahadur came to Delhi and here at Chandni Chowk he sacrificed himself.

Guru Tegh Bahadur made people aware...

Dharma shows us the path of peace and non-violence. Following the footsteps of Guru Nanak Dev, Guru Tegh Bahadur was also spreading the message of peace during his time. On the other hand, Aurangzeb did not want to see any religion above himself. He was forcibly converting Hindus and Sikhs by torturing them. Temples were being vandalized, and Hindu and Sikh women were being raped and tortured. In such a situation, Guru Tegh Bahadur made people aware by going from village to village and prepared them to fight against the Mughals. When it was his turn to sacrifice, he stood at the forefront.

Kashmiri Pandits had requested Guru Tegh Bahadur for help

Kashmir was considered a stronghold of Pandits, the reason for this was that very learned Pandits lived there. Then Sher Afgan Khan used to be the Subedar of Kashmir from Aurangzeb's side. Aurangzeb started torturing the Kashmiri Pandits and forcibly forced them to accept Islam. Kashmiri Pandits had heard about Tegh Bahadur, they decided to seek the help of Guru Tegh Bahadur to counter the atrocities against the Mughals.

When Kashmiri Pandits came to Guru Tegh Bahadur asking for help, he said go and tell Aurangzeb that if you change the religion of our Guru, and if he accepts Islam, we will too. This matter was conveyed to Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb immediately arrested Guru Tegh Bahadur and his companions. On the orders of Aurangzeb, Guru Ji along with five Sikhs were arrested and brought to Delhi.

Guru Tegh Bahadur's brothers were killed in front of their eyes, but...

To scare Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, Bhai Matidas Ji was cut with a saw in front of him. After Matildas, Bhai Dayala was thrown into the boiling oil. Then Bhai Sati Das was burnt alive. To make Guguru Tegh Bahadur a Muslim, fear of death was shown ranging from greed, but he did not accept Aurangzeb. Defeated, Aurangzeb brought him to Chandni Chowk and his neck was beheaded with a sword. Aurangzeb decreed that no one would perform the last rites of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

This is how the name Guru Tegh Bahadur came to be...

Guru Tegh Bahadur's childhood name was Tyagmal. At the age of just 14, he showed bravery in the war with the Mughals with his father. Impressed by this bravery, his father named him Teg Bahadur (richer of the sword) from Tyagmal. The gruesome bloodshed on the battlefield had a deep impact on Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's recluse mind and his mind turned towards spiritual contemplation.
