The Calcutta High Court has sought a detailed report from the Central Security Agency on how the chartered aircraft of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee started to wobble in the sky while returning from Varanasi to Kolkata sometime back. It is worth noting that earlier the court was informed by the Union Civil Aviation Ministry that there is no conspiracy behind this incident. The High Court wants to thoroughly investigate the veracity of the report of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, so now a report has been sought from the Central Security Agency in this regard. The Central Security Agency has been given two weeks in this regard. The next hearing on the matter will be on July 18.
Significantly, a Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the High Court regarding the investigation of the matter. Mamta had claimed that while returning from Varanasi to Kolkata last year, her plane wobbled in the sky not because of bad weather but because of another aircraft coming in front of her. Had it been 10 seconds late, there could have been a major accident. The plane was saved from the crash due to the efficiency of the pilot. They had suddenly brought the plane several thousand feet down in the sky. The state government had sought a report from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) regarding this. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the DGCA had ordered an inquiry into it. The state government has also sought to know from the DGCA whether prior permission was taken for the air route on which the other aircraft was flying.
According to the information available so far, Mamta's plane was 46 km away from Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at the time of the incident. 38 km ahead of him was an aircraft, which was preparing to land at the airport. State Secretariat sources have revealed that not only while returning from Varanasi, but a helicopter had also come close to Mamta's chartered plane on March 2 while going to Varanasi. The DGCA has been probing that matter as well. The state government has also sought to know from the DGCA whether prior permission was taken for the air route on which the other aircraft was flying.
