A heated debate has erupted between Bollywood actor Harshvardhan Rane and his Sanam Teri Kasam co-actress Mawra Hocane. Amid Indo-Pak tensions, Harshvardhan refused to work with Mawra in Sanam Teri Kasam 2, which Mawra termed as a PR stunt. The controversy made a lot of headlines on social media. Now the actor has hit back on this. Let's understand the whole matter.
This is how the controversy started.
Harshvardhan announced on Instagram on 10 May 2025 that he would not be a part of Sanam Teri Kasam 2 if Mawra remains involved in it. He objected to Mawra's comments against India, especially calling Operation Sindoor "cowardly". Harshvardhan wrote, "I respect all artists, but will not tolerate derogatory comments against my country."
He also said that he would prioritize the pride of his country despite losing fans. The statement came in the context of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent Indian retaliatory strikes that killed 26 people.
Mawra's response
Mawra hit back at Harshvardhan's statement, calling it a "PR strategy". "When our countries are at war, you are using my name to grab headlines. This is shameful and ridiculous," she wrote on Instagram. Mawra said that children were killed in her country, and she is praying for the citizens and soldiers of both countries, and is not worried about the film. She questioned Harshvardhan's intentions and called it an attempt to attract attention.
Harshvardhan's response
Harshvardhan responded to Mawra's allegations by saying, "There was hatred and personal comments in her statement. I never attacked her dignity." He reiterated his stance that he considers the country's honor paramount. The controversy has raised questions over the prospects of Sanam Teri Kasam 2, especially since the 2016 film grossed over Rs 50 crore after its re-release in 2025.
The film's directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru have also hinted at not casting Mawra in the sequel, as Pakistani artistes are banned in India. Fans were excited to see the pair reunite, but the controversy has become an example of the clash of art and politics.
