Experienced Indian batsman Karun Nair has failed to retain his place in the team for next month's two-match Test series against the West Indies. Karun returned to the team after eight years during the England tour, but was dropped from the very next series. Now, Karun Nair has broken his silence on this matter, stating that only the selectors can answer this.
Team to play under Gill's captaincy
The Indian team was announced on Thursday for next month's two-match Test series against the West Indies. Shubman Gill will captain the Indian team in this series, with Ravindra Jadeja named vice-captain. The first match of the two-match series between India and West Indies will be played on October 2nd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The selectors have given Devdutt Padikkal the opportunity in place of Karun for this series.
Karun failed to capitalize on his opportunity during the England tour.
Karun didn't perform as well as expected in the five-match Test series against England. He had a good start in all innings, scoring a half-century in the final Test at the Oval. He wasn't in bad form, but he couldn't score many runs. He scored 205 runs in four matches at an average of 25.62. This is why he wasn't selected for the West Indies series.
Speaking to a newspaper after the team announcement, Karun said, "I don't select, and I don't know what to say right now. There are no words, I don't want to comment, and it's difficult for me to answer. You should ask the selectors what they're thinking. All I can say is that I scored a half-century in the last Test, and at that time, no one could do that in the first innings. I think I contributed to the team, especially in the last match, which we won. But yes, that's it." These things don't matter.
Agarkar explained the reason.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also released a statement regarding Karun's exclusion. He said, "To be honest, we expected more from Karun. He played four Test matches, but we're talking about one innings. We think Padikkal would be better at this point, and we wish we could have given everyone the opportunity to play 15 or 20 Tests. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way."
