India-Syria Ties: S Jaishankar meets Syrian Foreign Minister, assures continuous humanitarian assistance

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met his Syrian counterpart Dr. Faisal Mekdad on Thursday. Jaishankar assured Mekdad of India's continued humanitarian assistance. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar particularly emphasized medicines and artificial organs. Jaishankar tweeted, 'Had a detailed discussion this evening on bilateral relations and regional situation with Dr. Faisal Mekdad, Foreign Minister of Syria. Assured them of continued humanitarian assistance from India, especially concerning medicines and artificial organs.

 

India is continuously assisting Syria

Explain that India has been providing humanitarian, technical, and developmental assistance to Syria through bilateral and multilateral channels over the years. Consignments of food and medicines have been supplied to Syria from time to time, including aid given during the pandemic, according to a press release from the Ministry of External Affairs. India has offered a line of credit of US $ 280 million to Syria for the construction of a power plant and a steel plant. Two artificial limb fitment camps (Jaipur Foot) have been conducted in Syria in December 2020 and most recently in October-November 2022.

 

Syrian Foreign Minister on India visit

Let us tell you that in October 2021, a Next-Gen Center for Information Technology was established in Damascus. Around 1500 scholarships have been awarded to Syrian students to study in India in various streams, including 200 scholarships in the current academic year. Mekdad is on an official visit to India from 17-21 November. This is his first visit to India as External Affairs Minister. Jaishankar today hosted the External Affairs Minister who came to India for bilateral talks. Both Ministers reviewed the current status of bilateral relations and discussed regional and international issues of mutual interest.

 

Syrian Foreign Minister meets Vice President and others

During the meeting, the two sides discussed humanitarian and developmental support to Syria, capacity building of Syrian youth, and cooperation in areas such as fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, IT, etc. Mekdad met Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. He interacted with the Indian business community at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as well as addressed a gathering at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defense Studies and Analyzes (MP IDSA).
