
More than two decades after the Kandahar plane hijacking, the family of victim Rupin Katyal has finally got justice. It is being told that Zahoor Mistry alias Zahid Akhund, the killer of hijacker and flight passenger Rupin Katyal, was shot dead on 1 March by unidentified gunmen in Karachi, Pakistan. According to media reports, on March 1, two bike-borne assailants entered the house under target killing and shot and killed Zahoor Mistry. Zahoor Mistry is a terrorist of Jaish and was living as a businessman in Karachi by hiding his identity. The footage of both the attackers has been captured in CCTV but they have not been identified.
Zahoor Mistry accused of killing flight passenger Rupin Katyal
On 25 December 1999, 25-year-old Rupin Katyal was brutally murdered by Zahoor Mistry and his body was recovered from a hijacked plane in the United Arab Emirates. He was returning to Delhi with his wife after their honeymoon in Kathmandu.
Many Jaish terrorists attended the funeral of Zahoor Mistry
The last rites of Zahoor Mistry are believed to have been attended by terrorists of the Jaish-e-Mohammed group, which is headquartered in Bahawalpur in Pakistan's Punjab province. Masood Azhar, Omar Saeed Sheikh, both then affiliated with the Harkat-ul-Ansar group, and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar, a Kashmiri terrorist, were released by the Indian government on December 31, 1999, under the watch of the then Taliban militant regime in Kandahar. After being released, Azhar met the then Taliban chief Mullah Omar and then went to Pakistan via the Spin Boldak crossing in Quetta.

Jaish terrorist Zahoor Mistry was among the five terrorists who hijacked Air India's IC-814. On 24 December 1999, terrorists hijacked an Indian aircraft in the air. The plane was hijacked from Kathmandu in Nepal and taken to Kandahar in Afghanistan. The passengers of the plane were held hostage for a week. The kidnappers had demanded the release of terrorists like Masood Azhar, Mushtaq Ahmed, and Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh to release the passengers. After this, the Indian government was forced to release all these terrorists.
