Landslide in Colombia, 34 killed including 8 children: Bus buried in mud; Eyewitness said – the debris came down very fast, no one could escape

A major accident took place in the South American country of Colombia on Monday. A bus was hit by a landslide here in Risaralda province. 34 people died in this accident. According to the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), eight children were among the dead. Many people are still buried under the debris. A rescue operation is going on.

 

An official said the landslide occurred in Risaralda province after heavy rains. Along with the bus, some other vehicles were also buried in the debris. The bus was going from the city of Cali to the city of Condoto in Choco province. Then the accident happened between Pueblo Rico and Santa Cecilia.

 

An eyewitness said – the debris came down so fast that no one could escape

During the accident, a person present at the spot told eyewitnesses. He said - first a car met with an accident. Due to this the road was closed. The vehicles coming behind stopped. After the accident, a jeep, bus, and motorbike were stopped there when a sudden landslide happened. The debris came down so fast that no one could escape. There were 2 drivers on the bus. Many passengers were also aboard.

 

A 7-year-old girl pulled out from the debris

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said- The government stands with the families of the victims in this difficult time. The rescue team official told that at present 9 people have been rescued. In this, a 7-year-old girl was pulled out alive from the debris. His mother died in the accident.

 

Dad took mom and my sister out too

An officer said – A person who died has been identified as Guillermo Ibarguen. His son said- I was scared after the accident. Papa helped me to get off the bus. They asked me to jump out of the window, and as soon as I got out of the bus, I saw mud and mud all around. Papa pulled out my mother and my sister too, but he could not pull himself out.

 

271 people died in 2022

According to Colombia's National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), 216 people have died so far in 2022. More than 5 lakh 38 thousand people became homeless.
