Moon was formed in a few hours, not thousands of years: Scientists raised questions on their theory, and new research is done with supercomputer

How the Moon was formed has always been an interesting topic of research for scientists. Since the year 1980, it is believed that a giant planet collided with Earth. Millions of years later, the moon was formed from its remains from it. But recently researchers from Durham University in England have made a shocking claim about it.

New research has said that a large part of the Earth would have been broken by this collision, but the process of formation of the Moon would not be so long. It must have been done in just a few hours. The thing that collided with the Earth is named Theia. Scientists consider it a planet the size of Mars.

NASA explained the process with animation video

Scientists from the US space agency NASA are also surprised to hear the new theory. He says that this is very different from the old theory. New research has opened doors for further research about the Moon, its atmosphere, and its orbit. Scientists from NASA and Durham University have also prepared a video of the simulations. In this clip of about two minutes, the process of the formation of the moon can be understood.

Research is done with the help of supercomputers

Researchers have done this research through powerful simulations of a supercomputer named COSMA. With the help of coding, they saw hundreds of collisions at once from different angles. Along with this, the speed, weight, planetary cycles, etc. of these collisions were also taken into account. Based on simulations, a huge difference has been found between the speed of formation of the Moon and our old estimate.

Earth's moon is 450 million years old

The Moon is 3.8 lakh kilometers away from the Earth. Researchers found the first evidence of its formation from 21.6 kg of moonstone and dust returned from America's Apollo 11 mission. It was found in the investigation that these samples are 450 million years old.
