Jitendra Satish Awhad has been appointed chief whip of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) after Ajit Pawar joined Eknath Shinde's Maharashtra government.
The appointment letter was handed over to the assembly speaker
NCP state president Jayant Patil also named Awhad as the new leader of the opposition and the new chief whip of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Hours after Ajit Pawar stepped down and joined the Maharashtra government along with some other NCP leaders, Awhad reached the Maharashtra Speaker's office and handed over his appointment letter to the assembly speaker.
The effect of upheaval will be seen in the upcoming elections
Ajit Pawar joined the Shinde-led Shiv Sena-BJP alliance in Maharashtra and was sworn in as the second deputy chief minister along with current deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. The impact of the state's political upheaval can be seen in the assembly and Lok Sabha elections to be held next year. It was a surprising and major political move that could have ramifications for national politics.
The name of the leader of the LOP post is not decided yet
Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe said that the name of the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has not been finalized yet, but will be done soon. Since then, there has been a race between the Congress and the NCP to appoint the Leader of the Opposition.
Competition between Congress and NCP
Atul Londhe said, "The whole picture is not clear yet. Why was the LOP from NCP? Because they had more MLAs, but now, Congress has 45 MLAs and as claimed by Ajit Pawar they have 40 MLAs." NCP will have only 13 MLAs left. In two to three days the picture will be clear as to who will be made LOP.
Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe said, "We (Congress) don't need to claim anything, this is the fixed formula and I don't think anyone has any objection to it."
Will strengthen the party again
Talking to reporters after his nephew and eight other party leaders rebelled and joined the Shiv Sena-BJP government, party chief Sharad Pawar said he was not worried about what had happened and was determined to strengthen the party again. Will work
Sharad Pawar also hinted at action against party leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare, saying they did not discharge their responsibilities. Sharad Pawar said that some of those who joined the Shiv Sena-BJP government are facing ED cases.
