WPL 2027 Auction: Strengths and Weaknesses of All 5 Teams After Squad Revamp

Posted on 29th Oct 2026 10:11 am by rohit kumar

The WPL 2027 auction reshaped the squads of all five franchises, with teams targeting specific gaps ahead of the upcoming Women’s Premier League season. UP Warriorz invested in multiple all-rounders, defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru strengthened their existing core, and Mumbai Indians added Indian players to increase their squad depth.

Delhi Capitals brought in aggressive batter Kiran Navgire, while Gujarat Giants added young Indian batter G. Kamalini and Irish all-rounder Orla Prendergast. However, successful recruitment is only the first step. The teams must now find the right combinations, build partnerships and make the most of their available players.

Here is a team-by-team analysis of the strengths and potential weaknesses of all five WPL 2027 squads following the auction.

1. UP Warriorz: All-Rounder Depth and a Powerful Top Order

UP Warriorz made one of the biggest moves of the auction by signing Australian all-rounder Sophie Molineux for ₹1.10 crore. They also brought back Grace Harris and signed Sneh Rana, Sushma Verma, Asha Sobhana, Kathryn Bryce and other players to add depth across departments.

Strengths

UP Warriorz have several established batters at the top of the order, including Meg Lanning, Phoebe Litchfield, Harleen Deol and Pratika Rawal. Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana provide valuable all-round options, while Molineux and Harris add overseas experience and flexibility.

The additional all-rounders give the team more options when building its playing XI, allowing it to adjust combinations according to the opposition and match conditions.

Weaknesses

Selecting the right combination will be a key challenge. The squad has several overseas options, but the standard WPL playing XI allows a maximum of four overseas players, with a special allowance for an Associate-nation player under the applicable rules.

UP Warriorz will also need consistent contributions from their middle order and bowling attack to improve on their bottom-place finish in the 2026 season.

2. Royal Challengers Bengaluru: A Championship-Winning Core

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru retained a strong group of established players and added Jess Jonassen, Tejal Hasabnis, Chloe Tryon and Vrinda Dinesh at the auction.

Strengths

Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, Georgia Voll and Richa Ghosh provide a strong batting foundation. RCB also have a range of bowling options, including Lauren Bell, Radha Yadav, Shreyanka Patil, Pooja Vastrakar and Arundhati Reddy.

Jonassen and Tryon bring additional overseas experience and all-round ability. The existing core gives RCB continuity, while the new signings offer greater flexibility when selecting the team.

Weaknesses

The middle order will be an area to watch. Players such as Tejal Hasabnis and Vrinda Dinesh will have opportunities to strengthen the batting depth, but the team needs dependable performances when early wickets fall.

RCB must also ensure they can accelerate during the closing overs without losing wickets. Maintaining consistency after a title-winning campaign will be another important test.

3. Delhi Capitals: Kiran Navgire Adds Batting Firepower

Delhi Capitals signed Kiran Navgire for ₹75 lakh, making her one of the notable Indian acquisitions of the auction. The team also added Uma Kashvi, Scotland’s Kirstie Gordon and Nazma Khan.

Strengths

Delhi’s top order features Shafali Verma, Laura Wolvaardt and Jemimah Rodrigues, offering a mix of attacking intent and stability. Navgire gives the side another aggressive batting option.

Marizanne Kapp, Annabel Sutherland and Chinelle Henry can contribute in more than one department, giving Delhi flexibility in their batting and bowling combinations.

Weaknesses

Delhi have reached the WPL final multiple times but are still seeking their first championship. Handling pressure in decisive matches and making timely tactical adjustments will remain important.

The team will also need to manage its wicketkeeping options carefully and ensure the batting order has enough depth to recover from early setbacks.

4. Gujarat Giants: Overseas Experience and New Indian Talent

Gujarat Giants added G. Kamalini for ₹40 lakh, Irish all-rounder Orla Prendergast for ₹30 lakh and young batter Samaira Raghav for ₹10 lakh.

Strengths

Beth Mooney, Ashleigh Gardner and Sophie Devine provide considerable international experience and offer contributions with both bat and ball. Georgia Wareham adds another useful spin-bowling and batting option.

In the Indian bowling department, Renuka Singh Thakur, Kashvee Gautam, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Tanuja Kanwer give the team options across different conditions.

Kamalini could also add depth to the batting and wicketkeeping departments as she adapts to the demands of the league.

Weaknesses

Gujarat will need consistent performances from their middle order, particularly if Mooney or Gardner falls early. The team must avoid becoming overly dependent on a small group of experienced players.

The new signings will also need time and opportunities to establish their roles. Integrating young talent into a competitive XI could be crucial to the team\'s progress.

5. Mumbai Indians: Experienced Overseas Core and Added Indian Depth

Mumbai Indians added six Indian players at the auction, including Shweta Sehrawat for ₹20 lakh and Disha Kasat, Latika Inamdar, Bharti Rawal, Sanika Chalke and Akshita Bhagat for ₹10 lakh each.

Strengths

Nat Sciver-Brunt, Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr offer quality all-round options, while captain Harmanpreet Kaur provides experience and leadership in the middle order.

Shabnim Ismail brings pace and international experience, while Mumbai also have multiple spin-bowling options. Their new Indian recruits provide additional choices and could help the team manage workloads across a long season.

Weaknesses

The new Indian players will need to adapt quickly to the level of competition. Young batters such as Shweta Sehrawat and Sanika Chalke could strengthen the lineup, but their impact will depend on how consistently they perform.

Mumbai will also need to settle on their preferred wicketkeeping option and identify the right batting order to support their experienced overseas core.
