The Supreme Court will hear the petitions related to the controversial National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) for medical admission on July 8. These include petitions alleging irregularities in the examination held on May 5 and requesting for it to be conducted afresh.
These 26 petitions will be heard.
According to the cause list uploaded on the Supreme Court website for July 8, a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra will hear 26 petitions. It is noteworthy that NEET-UG is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.
NEET-UG was conducted on May 5 at 4,750 centers and about 24 lakh candidates appeared in it. Earlier the results of this examination were expected to come on June 14, but the results were declared on June 4 when the evaluation of answer sheets was completed before time.
Why is there a ruckus across the country regarding NEET?
There were protests in many cities and allegations and counter-allegations were made between political parties over allegations of irregularities including question paper leaks. The Supreme Court, while hearing a petition seeking the re-conduct of NEET-UG 2024 on June 11 based on an alleged question paper leak and other irregularities, had said that the sanctity of the examination has been affected and had sought a reply from the Central Government and NTA on this. However, the court had refused to stay the counseling of successful candidates.
