weak start of the monsoon
The India Meteorological Department announced the onset of monsoon on 8 June. Experts had warned at that time also that the onset of monsoon would be weak and the pace would also be slow.
Some experts also believed that the rains in some places were not due to the monsoon but due to the interaction of Cyclone Biperjoy. The IMD said Biparjoy had initially aided the monsoon.

IMD Director General M Mohapatra said that due to the cyclone, the flow of air from the southern region to the northern region had intensified. He said the cyclone moved very slowly and helped the monsoon advance. The cyclone has now separated from the monsoon cycle.
