Telegram Ban in India: Why the Government Took This Major Step Before NEET UG Re-Test

Posted on 17th Jun 2026 10:54 am by rohit kumar

In a major move aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, the Central Government has temporarily restricted access to Telegram across India. The National Testing Agency (NTA) confirmed that the restriction will remain in place until June 22, covering the period of the NEET-UG re-exam scheduled for June 21 and the immediate aftermath.

According to the NTA, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued the directive under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The temporary restriction is intended to prevent the spread of misinformation, fake paper leak claims, and other activities that could compromise the examination process.

Why Has Telegram Been Banned?

The NTA stated that authorities identified concerns regarding the misuse of Telegram's message-editing feature. Officials believe the feature could be exploited to alter previously posted messages while retaining original timestamps, creating fabricated evidence of exam paper leaks after the examination has taken place.

To address this issue, the government has ordered Telegram to disable its message-editing feature for messages already posted in India until June 30, 2026.

The agency explained that this measure is specifically aimed at preventing the creation and circulation of misleading content related to national-level examinations.

Message Editing Feature to Remain Disabled Until June 30

The NTA clarified that while access to Telegram has been temporarily restricted until June 22, the platform's message-editing feature will remain disabled until June 30.

According to the agency, the feature had been identified as a potential tool for generating false narratives regarding paper leaks by modifying existing messages and preserving earlier timestamps. Authorities believe disabling this functionality will help ensure transparency and prevent the spread of misinformation.

NTA Appeals to Students and Parents

Acknowledging that the restrictions may inconvenience genuine users, the NTA emphasized that the measures are temporary and necessary to maintain public confidence in the examination process.

The agency urged students, parents, and stakeholders to rely exclusively on official NTA communication channels for examination-related updates and information.

The NTA reiterated that the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination will be conducted as scheduled on June 21 and assured candidates that comprehensive security arrangements have been put in place to ensure a fair and transparent examination process.

Government Intensifies Crackdown on Exam Fraud

The temporary Telegram restriction is part of a broader effort by the government to strengthen exam security following concerns over misinformation and alleged paper leak claims surrounding competitive examinations.

Authorities have repeatedly stressed their commitment to protecting the credibility of national entrance exams and preventing the spread of unverified information that could create confusion among students.

With lakhs of medical aspirants preparing for the NEET-UG re-examination, the government's latest action underscores its focus on maintaining the integrity and fairness of one of India's most important entrance examinations.
