The Karnataka Assembly is likely to pass a resolution on Wednesday declaring that the border dispute with Maharashtra has been resolved. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has constituted a committee with three ministers from each state to prevent the escalation of the 56-year-old border dispute.

Both Houses of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly will pass a resolution on the border dispute with Maharashtra. The Legislature reiterated the state's stand that the issue was settled and not an inch of land would be given to the neighboring state. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, during a debate on the border dispute in the Assembly on Tuesday, himself suggested passing a unanimous resolution in both houses of the state legislature.

It has been said in the proposed resolution, the day the states were reformed based on language, the state's boundary was imposed on that day. As far as the state is concerned, there was no border dispute with Maharashtra.

The controversy was discussed for half a day on Tuesday in the ongoing assembly session in Belagavi. Both the Houses of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly can pass a resolution regarding this on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday suggested that both Houses should pass a resolution saying that the border dispute issue has been resolved, to which Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah agreed.

The chief minister said the development happened after Siddaramaiah raised the issue during Zero Hour and Bommai replied that as far as the state is concerned, the border dispute has been resolved and the state will not cede an inch of land to Maharashtra. The state government will soon hold an all-party meeting on this matter.

Bommai recalled an incident in June 1986, when Sharad Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party, despite being banned from entering Karnataka, managed to visit Belagavi. After this, he hid in a house and participated in a protest jointly organized by the Maharashtra Integration Committee (MES) and the Shiv Sena.

Bommai said the Karnataka authorities kept a close watch on the border even as Maharashtra ministers Chandrakant Patil and Shambhuraje Desai were prevented from entering the state to meet pro-Maharashtra supporters.

The Chief Minister said the government has not permitted such gimmicks in Maharashtra. He said that according to him Maharashtra Shiv Sena MP Dharyasil Mane had sought security under 'Y' category from Karnataka. However, he was told about prohibitory orders in Belagavi and was not allowed to enter the state.

Bommai said, however, that despite having the right to move within the state without permission, there may be a prohibition for some people whose entry violates law and order.

Responding to Siddaramaiah, who said the government should have held a meeting of all parties before attending Shah's meeting, Bommai said the state government also thought so but did not have time for that.

The chief minister said Karnataka's letter to Shah, which was written by the principal secretary of the state government, was another piece of evidence for the state's border argument in the Supreme Court.

Earlier, Siddaramaiah had protested that the state government was not taking all political parties into confidence before attending Shah's meeting.

He said Maharashtra's claim on Belagavi and some other places in Karnataka is politically motivated. He said that the pro-Maharashtra organization MES has become an obstacle and a headache for which it should be banned in the state.

The former Chief Minister said that there is no border dispute in Karnataka. The Nyaya Mahajan Commission was set up as per the demand of Maharashtra, despite Karnataka's opposition. Maharashtra did not accept the recommendations of the commission.

Siddaramaiah said, we will not give even an inch of our land and the recommendations of Nyaya Mahajan Commission are final for us.

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders said several MLAs, including those from the Belagavi district, participated in the debate. After the unanimous resolution is passed on Wednesday, it will be sent to the Maharashtra government, the central government, and the apex court.

On 14 December, Shah asked Bommai and his Maharashtra counterpart Eknath Shinde not to raise the issue of the border dispute until it was settled by the Supreme Court and appointed him as a six-member committee along with three ministers from neighboring states. Was asked to set up a committee.

Meanwhile, Ashok Chandragiri, convenor of the Action Committee of Kannada organizations, welcomed the state's stand on the issue. Status quo should be maintained or Justice Mahajan's recommendations should be implemented, he said.

Deepak Gudaganatti, Belagavi district president of one of the protesting organizations, said Kannada organizations have also welcomed the government's move. It is a good sign that at least the government has yielded to the request of the Kannadigas in the border areas.

According to sources, a large number of police personnel will be deployed at the Vaccine Depot ground, where the Intermediate Maharashtra Integration Committee is protesting demanding the merger of Belagavi with Maharashtra. Let us tell you that some leaders of Maharashtra had expressed their desire to participate in this program. Maharashtra MP Dhairysheel Mane had also requested the Belagavi district administration to make arrangements for his travel to the city. However, the district authorities banned his entry saying that his potentially inflammatory speech could lead to law and order problems.
