To find out that there are more than 50 passengers inside the coach, the Delhi Metro has found a technical way. The metro will detect this by the weight of passengers boarding the train. In an eight-coach train, if the weight of the train increases by more than 2400 kg, it means the number of passengers on the train has increased to more than 400. Each coach has more than 50 people on average. The next station passengers can then be prevented from boarding it depending on the crowd.
In a special conversation with Hindustan, DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh said that when the passengers climb on the train, the information about the increasing weight in the train reaches the driver. This information of weight through sensors is different from the weight of the train. The metro considers the average weight of a passenger to be 60–65 kg. A coach weighs about 42 tons (4200 kg). That is, apart from the coach weight, the weight increased by 300 kg, so more than 50 passengers are present in the coach.
Mangu Singh said that to avoid congestion in the metro, our first preparation would be to stop the crowd at the entrance gate itself. But because of what is inside, there is no crowd inside the coach so that we will not stop the train at the station if there is a crowd inside the coach. On reading the need, we will run an empty train on a small loop. Which can reduce the congestion at the station? He said that 2000–2200 people used to travel in an eight-coach train before Covid. But now this number has been kept 50 per coach to ensure social distance.
Every 3-4 trains will run empty from the crowded terminal station
Managing Director Mangu Singh said that we have also identified some terminal stations like Vaishali, Noida City Center, Huda City Center, where the crowd of passengers is high. In it, coaches are filled initially. These trains will not be stopped at the next station. Empty trains will run from these stations every 3 or 4 rounds (depending on the crowd) for the passengers of the next station and to avoid any congestion on the train. Apart from this, there may be congestion at stations like Hauz Khas, Kashmiri Gate, Rajiv Chowk. For this, we will also run a small loop train.
Trains will run at the same frequency in peak hours and non-peak hours
Mangu Singh said that in normal days we used to have different train frequencies in peak hours and non-peak hours. But during the Covid epidemic, we will keep the same frequency both these times. Its purpose is that we can ask the passengers to come at different times. Due to Covid, frequency will also increase from two and a half minutes to more than five minutes. But both non-peak hours and peak hours will be the same at both times.
