The people of Pakistan, who are living in a severe economic crisis, lack of essential things, and political upheaval, are now under the threat of an earthquake. Along with the videos and pictures of the damage caused by the severe earthquake in Turkey and Syria, a discussion is also spread on social media in the country that a strong earthquake is about to hit Pakistan. Several such messages, being circulated through WhatsApp, said that the possible earthquake would affect the whole of South Asia, but would cause more devastation in Pakistan and its bordering Indian areas.
Such rumors gained momentum when the Twitter handle of an organization calling itself 'Solar System Geometry Survey' expressed such apprehensions. It claimed that it was possible to predict earthquakes based on the movement of the moon. In such a prediction, it can be told at which place the earthquake will occur. It was said on this Twitter handle- 'There is a possibility of intense seismic activities around the purple band within one to six days. This is a guess. Other areas may also be affected by this. The meaning of purple band was said to be close to Pakistan.
After this, a video went viral on social media. It was attributed to Frank Hoogerbeets, a "seismologist" from the Netherlands. In it, the person was heard saying that seismic activities are being prepared near Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India. Although that video was earlier, in which there was a possibility of an earthquake of magnitude six or more on the Richter scale between February 4 and 6. Some posts on social media claimed that Huggerbeats had predicted earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in advance. Although the predicted date of Hoogerbeats has passed, it has a special role in spreading fear in almost every area of Pakistan.
While scientists have denied all such apprehensions. He has bluntly said that it is not possible to predict earthquakes in advance. He has said that the approach of the organizations and individuals like Huggerbeats who have spread this rumor on social media is completely unscientific. The American agency United States Geological Survey (USGS) has written on its website – 'The USGS or any other scientist has never predicted any major earthquake. We do not know anything about how earthquakes occur, nor is it likely to happen shortly.
Caltech, the world's renowned scientific and engineering organization, has said- 'At present, it is not possible to tell when an earthquake will occur, where it will occur and what will be its intensity.' Scientists have strongly criticized Huggerbeats for spreading fear. But within the last few days, the number of followers of Huggerbeats on Twitter has increased rapidly. There has been an increase of ten lakhs in this.
