British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, surrounded by the Partygate scandal, has won the trust vote. Of the 359 lawmakers in the ruling Conservative Party, 211 voted in favor of him, while 148 opposed. Johnson needed the support of 180 lawmakers to win. A motion of confidence was moved against Johnson by Graham Brady, chairman of the backbench committee of his own Conservative Party. After the counting of votes, Brady said that there were 211 votes in favor of Johnson and 148 against.
Johnson won the trust vote by securing the support of 59 percent of party MPs. Earlier, in December 2018, due to the Brexit controversy, the then PM Theresa May won the trust vote by getting 63 percent of the party MPs. However, he had to step down later. In the early days of Corona, PM Johnson was surrounded by the opposition along with the party by gathering a crowd at the birthday party contrary to the rules at 10 Downing Street in the Prime Minister's Office. This birthday party was given the name of Partygate Scandal.
59 percent of MPs supported Boris
Johnson got 59 percent support from the party, while 41.2 percent were voted against his leadership. Significantly, in this no-confidence motion, every Conservative MP voted. Sir Graham Brady, in charge of the no-confidence letters received by the committee, stated that 54 MPs (15 percent) of the Tory parliamentary party were demanding it. The no-confidence motion was moved in the 'House of Commons on Monday evening. Let us inform you that more than 40 MPs have publicly demanded Johnson resign from the post of leader of the party.
Significantly, with no clear front-runner for Boris Johnson's successor, most political observers predicted he would defeat the challenger. Even though Boris Johnson has won the no-confidence motion, the signs of a split within the Conservative Party are visible.
Know what is the party gate case
The Partygate case pertains to more than a dozen gatherings and parties at Johnson's 10 Downing Street residence and adjacent buildings, which took place when people in Britain were unable to meet each other due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions. All kinds of restrictions were in place.
Johnson and his employees illegally enjoyed parties at the office while millions of people across the country adhered to strict COVID-19 restrictions. These claims have plagued Johnson's Conservative government since they first surfaced late last year. Critics, including some in Johnson's party, have been demanding his resignation.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson had apologized
Boris Johnson apologized for the incidents but said he had not intentionally broken the rules. He said that he did not know that that small crowd of people was a party. His claim was ridiculed by many.
However, the police did not reveal the identities of those who have been issued fine notices. Earlier Downing Street confirmed that Boris Johnson, his wife Carrie, and Chancellor Rishi Sunak were among those fined over a birthday party in the British Prime Minister's cabinet room in June 2020.
