The court has delivered its verdict on five serious charges against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The court found her guilty and sentenced her to death. This decision has caused a sensation not only in Bangladesh but throughout the world.
In its verdict, Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) found Sheikh Hasina guilty of acts against humanity. In addition to the former Prime Minister, the court also ordered action against former Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Ali.
Sheikh Hasina was declared a fugitive.
A three-judge bench headed by Justice Mohammad Golam Majumdar stated that all three accused were involved in the killing of protesters, which sparked violence across the country. The court declared Sheikh Hasina and Kamal fugitives and ordered the punishment of Chowdhury Abdullah Ali.
What did the court say?
The court acknowledged that the Hasina government ignored the students' demands. Meanwhile, when a large number of students began protesting on the streets, the former Prime Minister made an offensive remark, calling them "Razakars."
This statement by Sheikh Hasina angered all students, including female students, and the protesters resorted to violence.
To control the violence, Sheikh Hasina ordered strict action.
Different branches of Sheikh Hasina's party, the Awami League, including the Chhatra League and the Youth League, attacked Dhaka University students.
Sheikh Hasina has committed crimes against humanity. On August 5th, six protesters were killed in Chankharpul. On Sheikh Hasina's orders, the then Home Minister and Inspector General took action, resulting in the deaths of several students.
Bangladesh Violence
According to a United Nations report, last year's violence in Bangladesh between July 15th and August 15th claimed 1,400 lives and injured thousands. Meanwhile, after the situation in Bangladesh spiralled out of control, Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5, 2024. Kamal, the then Home Minister, also fled the country. The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has been requesting Sheikh Hasina's extradition for the past year, but India has yet to respond.
