New Delhi, Jan 13 (IANS) Indian Army chief Gen. Dalbir Singh Tuesday said short tenures in higher ranks of the army were not desirable and he has given directions to increase them.

Addressing reporters at the annual press conference ahead of Army Day, Gen. Dalbir Singh said the army was keen to make the Short Service Commission more attractive.

Answering a query, he said: "I am with you that short tenures in higher ranks (are) not desirable."

"I have reviewed this. (Have) already given directions," he said, adding that he has given directions to increase them from 12 months to 14-15 months.

He said short tenures had come about due to addition of ranks.

Answering another query, Gen. Dalbir Singh said there was shortage of people volunteering for Short Service Commission.

"Complete vacancies are not being fulfilled because the Short Service Commission is not as attractive (as permanent commission)," he said.

He said the army has taken up a proposal with the defence ministry of making the Short Service Commission attractive, and the proposal will go to the finance ministry.
