Ahmedabad, March 18 (IANS) The Solar Impulse (Si2) aircraft, powered solely by the sun's energy, took off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Wednesday morning for its next leg to Varanasi on its global flight, an official said.
Taking off at 7.18 a.m. in bright sunshine, the Si2 is expected to cover the 1,128-km long flight to Varanasi's Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport in around 12 hours, or around 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
The zero-fuel airplane, which landed in Ahmedabad around midnight on March 10 and was stationed here for six days, will maintain a minimum altitude of around 5,200 metres on its flight to Varanasi.
Earlier the airplane had a scheduled four-day stopover here, but the onward flight was delayed on account of the inclement weather conditions due to western disturbances.
From Varanasi, the Si2 will fly on its onward trip to Mandalay in Burma.
