Stock Market Rules Change: Trading Timings Revised, New CAS System Comes Into Effect—Here's What Investors Need to Know

Posted on 1st Aug 2026 05:55 pm by rohit kumar

A major change is coming for Indian stock market participants. Beginning August 3, 2026, stock exchanges will implement the Closing Auction Session (CAS) for F&O (Futures & Options) stocks, replacing the existing Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) method used to determine closing prices. The move, introduced by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), aims to improve price discovery, enhance market transparency, and curb manipulation of closing prices.

What Is the New Closing Auction Session (CAS)?

Under the new system, exchanges will conduct a 15-minute Closing Auction Session (CAS) from 3:15 PM to 3:30 PM for securities eligible for F&O trading.

Instead of calculating the closing price based on the average trading price during the last 30 minutes of the session, the final price will now be determined through a single auction mechanism, where all buy and sell orders are matched at one equilibrium price.

This change is expected to produce a more accurate and transparent closing price for eligible stocks.

Key Changes From August 3

The new framework introduces several important changes:

CAS will run from 3:15 PM to 3:30 PM for F&O stocks.

VWAP-based closing price calculation will be discontinued for eligible securities.

Buy and sell orders will be matched at a single equilibrium price during the auction.

The change will initially apply only to F&O stocks.

For non-F&O stocks, normal trading will continue until 3:30 PM.

The post-closing session for non-F&O stocks will shift to 3:50 PM–4:00 PM.

Equity derivatives trading will continue until 3:40 PM, extending the earlier 3:30 PM closing time.

How Will Retail Investors Be Affected?

According to market experts, the change will have minimal impact on the day-to-day trading experience of retail investors but will improve the accuracy of market closing prices.

A more reliable closing price will also benefit:

Mutual fund NAV calculations

Portfolio valuation

Index tracking

Benchmark pricing

Institutional settlements

Initially, the majority of listed stocks outside the F&O segment will continue to follow the existing trading process.

Why Is SEBI Introducing CAS?

SEBI's primary objective is to prevent manipulation of stock prices during the final minutes of trading.

Large institutional investors and passive funds often execute sizeable orders near market close to match benchmark indices. Such transactions can significantly influence the closing price of stocks and market indices.

The new auction-based system aggregates all buy and sell orders and determines a single equilibrium price, making it much harder for any participant to artificially influence the market close.

Market Experts Welcome the Move

Industry experts believe the new framework will strengthen market integrity.

According to market participants, the Closing Auction Session is expected to:

Improve price discovery

Reduce closing-price manipulation

Lower index tracking errors

Increase transparency

Better reflect actual market demand and supply

Improve overall market efficiency

The new mechanism aligns Indian markets with global best practices adopted by several international stock exchanges.
