Demonstrations took place in many places in Afghanistan on Wednesday following the Taliban's order to prevent girls from studying in universities. Most of the students gathered outside Kandahar and Jalalabad universities. One student even committed suicide. In Jalalabad, medical students tore exam papers and raised slogans, 'Either all or none'.
The students say the Taliban took away girls' rights despite assurances. There is also an entrance exam to be held at the university in 3 months. Women from the Afghanistan Women's Unity and Solidarity Group demonstrated in Kabul. The Taliban removed them using force and clarified that studies would resume once the right atmosphere was created. This is a nightmare for Afghan women, said Nahid Farid, an Afghan MP in exile.
All that was gained in 20 years was snatched away
Afghan women's rights activist Khadija Ahmadi said, "All the rights that women had got in the last 20 years were taken away." The women employees have already been removed. Afghan educationist Ahmad Farhad said, the Taliban fear that if women are educated, they will oppose their radical ideology.
World worried over Taliban's decision
This decision has been strongly condemned at the international level as well. The United Nations said this is a conspiracy to eradicate women from Afghan society. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the Taliban will not be able to become a member of the international community until it respects the rights of the people. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has also condemned this decision and warned to change the decision.
