Telegram Temporarily Banned in India Ahead of NEET Exam? Centre Takes Major Step to Prevent Cheating

Posted on 16th Jun 2026 01:45 pm by rohit kumar

In a major move to safeguard the integrity of national examinations, the Central Government has temporarily restricted access to Telegram across India ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination. The National Testing Agency (NTA) confirmed that the restriction will remain in effect until June 22, covering the examination day and the immediate post-exam period.

According to the NTA, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued the directive under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The decision comes amid concerns over the misuse of messaging platforms to spread misinformation and create false narratives regarding examination paper leaks.

Telegram Restricted Until June 22

The NEET-UG 2026 re-examination is scheduled to be conducted on June 21. To ensure a fair and transparent examination process, authorities have temporarily blocked access to Telegram in India until June 22.

Officials stated that the restriction is a precautionary measure aimed at preventing the circulation of misleading content, fabricated screenshots, and unverified claims related to the examination.

Message Editing Feature Disabled Until June 30

Apart from restricting platform access, the government has also directed Telegram to disable its message-editing feature for content already posted in India until June 30, 2026.

The NTA explained that certain individuals had allegedly used Telegram's editing capability to modify previously posted messages while retaining original timestamps. This practice could create misleading evidence suggesting that examination papers had been leaked before the test was conducted.

By disabling message editing, authorities aim to curb the spread of manipulated content and maintain public confidence in the examination system.

Why Did the Government Take This Step?

The government believes that misinformation regarding paper leaks can create panic among students and parents, damage the credibility of national examinations, and disrupt the overall examination process.

Officials noted that social media and messaging platforms have increasingly become channels for spreading fake claims during major competitive exams. The temporary restrictions are intended to prevent such activities and ensure that only verified information reaches candidates.

NTA Appeals to Students

The National Testing Agency has urged candidates not to rely on rumours circulating on social media and messaging applications. Students have been advised to follow only official NTA notifications, websites, and communication channels for authentic updates related to the examination.

The agency acknowledged that genuine Telegram users may face inconvenience due to the temporary restriction but emphasized that the measure is necessary to protect the credibility and fairness of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination.

NEET-UG Re-Exam to Proceed as Scheduled

Despite the restrictions, the NTA confirmed that the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination will be conducted as planned on June 21. Authorities have assured students that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth and transparent examination process.

The temporary Telegram ban and restrictions on message editing represent one of the strongest digital measures taken by the government to prevent misinformation and maintain trust in India's examination system.
