So far more than 7 thousand aftershocks have been felt in the area. A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck late Monday night, killing 8 people and injuring 300. Dozens of buildings, weakened by previous earthquakes, collapsed.

 

Here, there is a shortage of space in the cemeteries in Antakya city of Hatay province of Turkey. The government has set up a mass grave in a remote area of the city to bury the dead in the tragedy. The DNA samples of the dead bodies which could not be identified are being kept.

The epicenter of the quake that struck late Monday was the city of Antakya in Hatay province. The depth of the earthquake remained up to 2 kilometers. The intensity of the aftershocks that followed was 3.4 to 5.8. Tremors were also felt in Lebanon, Israel, and Cyprus. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center, further aftershocks may have to be faced.

In Turkey, social workers paid tribute to the children killed in the tragedy by placing red balloons in the rubble. Project leader Ogwen Sewer Okur said that they tied 1000-1500 balloons at various places in the debris. Each balloon commemorates the children who lost their lives in the earthquake. More balloons will be installed under this project.

There were 3 major earthquakes in the morning of February 6 in Turkey and Syria. According to Turkish time, the first earthquake occurred at around 4 am (7.8), the second at around 10 am (7.6), and the third at 3 pm (6.0). After this, aftershocks were also recorded. Their intensity was 4 to 5. There was another earthquake in Turkey on February 7 at 8.53 am. This was followed by a 5.4 magnitude earthquake at 12.41 pm.
