At least 24 people have died in flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in coastal areas of southeast Brazil. Relief and rescue work is still going on. News agency Reuters has given this information.

The Sao Paulo state government confirmed 19 deaths and 566 displaced or homeless persons after more than 600 millimeters (23.62 in) of rain lashed the coast of Brazil's richest state. Weather forecasts show that heavy rains will continue in the coastal region of São Paulo, which could increase the death toll.

 

São Paulo state declared a 180-day state of disaster for six cities in what experts described as an unprecedented and extreme weather event.

 

The President will visit the main affected areas

Operations at Latin America's largest port of Santos were disrupted on Saturday amid wind gusts of more than 55 kilometers per minute (34.18 mph) and waves more than a meter high, according to a local news outlet.
