Nine people were killed and several others were injured in a deadly explosion near the Nowgam police station premises in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday night. Security personnel have cordoned off the area around the station, and an investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat also visited the scene and left after assessing the situation. The investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing. Jammu and Kashmir DGP Nalin Prabhat said that during the investigation of FIR No. 162/2025 of Nowgam police station, a large quantity of explosives, chemicals, and reagents were recovered from Faridabad on November 9 and 10, 2025. This seizure, like the other seizures, was safely transported and stored in the open area of Nowgam police station.
As per the prescribed procedure, samples of the seizure were to be sent for further forensic and chemical examination. Due to the large quantity of the seizure, the FSL team had been carrying out this process for the past two days.
The sampling process and operations were being carried out with utmost care by the FSL team. However, unfortunately, an accidental explosion occurred during this time at around 11:20 pm on Friday night. Any further speculation about the cause of this incident is futile.
Nine people lost their lives in this incident. One SIA employee, three FSL personnel, two crime scene photographers, two revenue officers from the magistrate's team, and a tailor associated with the team were killed.
In addition, 27 policemen, two revenue officers, and three civilians from the surrounding area were injured and were immediately rushed to the nearest hospital. The police station building sustained extensive damage, and nearby buildings were also affected.
The extent of the damage is being assessed. The cause of this unfortunate incident is being investigated. The Jammu and Kashmir Police stands with the families of the deceased in this hour of grief.
This was the entire incident.
A massive explosion occurred at around 11:20 pm on Friday night at the Nowgam police station in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Nine people were killed and 32 others, including 27 policemen, were injured. The massive fire caused by the blast burned more than a dozen vehicles parked nearby. The explosion was so powerful that its sound was heard seven kilometers away in Rajbagh, Old Secretariat, Chanpora, Sanatnagar, Rawalpora, and Pantha Chowk areas.
The blast reportedly occurred while sampling a large cache of explosives recently seized in connection with a white-collar terrorist module case. The explosives seized were ammonium nitrate and NPS.
The white-collar terrorist module of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind was busted in a case registered at this police station on October 19. It was during this police station's investigation that 2,900 kilograms of explosive material and a large quantity of weapons were recovered in Faridabad after the arrest of two OGWs.
Police sealed off the area.
Immediately after the explosion, the police sealed off the entire area. All roads leading to the scene were also closed. Sources said that Jammu and Kashmir Police seized 360 kg and 2,550 kg of ammonium nitrate and NPS from two locations of Dr. Muzammil Ganai, a member of a white-collar terrorist module in Faridabad. The explosives were reportedly brought to the Nowgam police station. Police have so far arrested nine suspects from this module, including Muzammil.
