American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969, as part of the US space agency Apollo 11 lunar mission. The announcement to celebrate International Moon Day was made in the United Nations General Assembly meeting held on 9 December 2021. The proposal to celebrate this day was put before the General Assembly by the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. Which was passed by the General Assembly to be celebrated on 20 July every year. Since then, International Moon Day is celebrated every year on this date.
