Today is International Moon Day 2023, Buzz Aldrin's first steps on the moon with Neil Armstrong

Today, on July 20, International Moon Day is being observed globally. International Moon Day is celebrated every year on this date to commemorate the first human step on the Moon, the one-month natural satellite of our Earth. American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969, as part of the US space agency Apollo 11 lunar mission. Today is the 54th anniversary of this step of a man lying outside the earth.

Every year a theme is declared by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) for International Moon Day. The theme of this year's International Moon Day has been announced by UNOOSA as Lunar Exploration Coordination & Sustainability, which shows how important sustainable exploration of the Moon is for humans.

 

 

International Moon Day 2023 History: History of International Moon Day

The announcement to celebrate International Moon Day was made in the United Nations General Assembly meeting held on 9 December 2021. The proposal to celebrate this day was put before the General Assembly by the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. Which was passed by the General Assembly to be celebrated on 20 July every year. Since then, International Moon Day is celebrated every year on this date.

 

International Moon Day 2023 India: India sent Chandrayaan 3

Various missions have also been carried out by India for the exploration of the Moon. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) recently launched the country's third moon mission Chandrayaan-3 on 14 July 2023 from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. Chandrayaan-3 will make a soft landing on the South Pole of the Moon around 5.47 pm on August 23 after a scheduled 41-day journey.
