Natarajan Chandrasekaran was born in a farming family in the village of Mohanur in Tamil Nadu. He was one of six children. Chandrasekaran's father was a lawyer, but after his grandfather's death, his father had to look after the family farm, which grew bananas, rice, and sugarcane.
When Chandrasekaran was a child, he and his brother used to walk three kilometers daily to attend their Tamil medium government school. For his senior secondary exams, he joined an English medium school. After passing the 10th standard, he went to Trichy for further studies.
Chandrasekaran has been in the 154-year-old Tata Group for the last 34 years. The companies have done well since he became the chairman of Tata Sons in 2017. Whether it is the market cap, returns to the investors, or their revenue or profit, they have stood up on every front.
Chandrasekaran is popularly known as Chandra. He became the chairman of Tata Sons for the first time in 2017 and this was the last day of his tenure on February 20. Now his tenure will be till 2027. Chandra has taken the group going through the crisis of leadership by performing well in 5 years. He joined the group in 1988 after doing MBA from IIM Kolkata.
For the first time, he worked as a trainee in TCS. He was the first non-family member to become the chairman of the group. Chandra, 53, joined TCS in 1987 and became its CEO in 2009. TCS is the largest company in the country.
Chandrasekaran holds a BSc degree in Applied Sciences from Coimbatore Institute of Technology. After that, he came back home and stayed there for six months to see whether he would be happy to take up farming as a profession. After four or five months passed, he realized that he was not fit for the agriculture sector and thought of becoming a CA.
Tata Group has a total of 8 lakh employees. This group was started by Jamsetji Tata in 1868. There are 30 companies in 10 verticals out of which 29 are listed on the stock market. It has businesses in 100 countries. Tata Sons are the head company of all the companies. The group's revenue in 2021 stood at Rs 7.7 lakh crore while there were 8 lakh employees.
