Uttarakhand Weather Update: Effect of the jet stream in India, severe heat, the possibility of melting icebergs and avalanches

Uttarakhand Weather Update: The increasing indifference to the weather in Uttarakhand is surprising even the meteorologists. After the continuous reduction in rainfall in winter, now the rapidly rising temperature is becoming a matter of concern.

The weather patterns are shocking due to the active western jet air stream in the country. There is a possibility of its widespread impact in Uttarakhand as well. There can be an unexpected temperature rise, especially in mountainous regions. Due to this, there is a possibility of melting icebergs and avalanches.

Along with this, the feeling of heat has also started in the state. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert regarding the extreme rise in temperature for the next five days.

Uttarakhand has yearning for rain since the departure of the monsoon

Uttarakhand has been longing for rain since the departure of the monsoon in October. More than 70 percent deficiency was registered in the average rainfall in the state in winter. Due to less rainfall and snowfall, December-January has also been below normal and the atmosphere remained dry for most of the time.

Now with the commencement of the second fortnight of February, the temperature has started rising continuously and the heat is being felt during the day. However, the chill persists in the morning and evening. Meteorologists are attributing the rise in temperature to the westerly jet air currents active in the country.

Because of these, hot winds from the stratosphere and changes in air pressure are being seen in the mountainous regions. The effect of this jet air stream was being seen very less for the last few years. Because of this temperature uniformity is maintained. But, this time due to excessive activity, a widespread effect of the western jet air stream can be seen in Uttarakhand.

Temperature can be eight to 12 degree Celsius higher than normal

The weather remained dry in the state and bright sunshine was shining in most areas. According to Bikram Singh, director of the Meteorological Center, the maximum temperature is expected to remain above normal by eight to 10 degrees Celsius in the districts of Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Almora, Nainital, Champawat, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar of Uttarakhand for the next four-five days.

Whereas, the maximum temperature in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh districts may reach 12 degrees Celsius above normal. There are chances of light rain at some places on coming 19th and 20th February. Along with this, there can be a difference of up to 18 degree Celsius in day and night temperatures.

This is a jet air stream

The jet air stream is one of the factors affecting the Indian climate.

Jet streams or jet air currents are fast-flowing winds in the upper atmosphere, especially in the stratosphere.

The direction of its flow is fixed like that of water currents.

It is of two types, the western jet stream, and the eastern jet stream. The westerly jet stream is permanent.

Its partial effect remains throughout the year.

Its flow direction is mainly from west and north India to south and it is responsible for dry winds in winter.

The low-pressure area formed by the warm air on the surface is the reason for the temperature rise.

The direction of the Eastern Jet Stream is from South-East to North-West India. This is a temporary flow and its effect is visible only during the rainy season.
