The Delhi government, which came to power by promising to give 200 units of free electricity to the people of Delhi, is going to give a shock this summer regarding free electricity. According to sources in the Delhi government, the subsidy for consumers consuming more than 3 kilowatts of electricity may be lost.
According to a senior Delhi government official, the DIRC has suggested to the Delhi government to consider providing power subsidies to consumers based on consumption. For preparing the proposal of this arrangement, those consumers whose electricity consumption is more than 3 kilowatts will be kept out of subsidy.
401 units out of subsidy
Presently Delhi gets zero bills on the consumption of electricity up to 0-200 units. At the same time, the load of the electricity connection does not affect the subsidy. If the consumption of electricity is within 400 units, then the consumer gets a 50% subsidy on the bill subject to a maximum of Rs.800. As soon as 401 units are there, the consumer is out of the purview of the subsidy.
Of about 58 lakh electricity consumers in Delhi, 40 lakhs have registered for subsidy
Now all the consumers in Delhi get electricity subsidies only on demand. From October 1, 2022, the Delhi government has implemented this system. So far, more than 40.28 lakh consumers have registered for electricity subsidies. The date of when the application process will start for the financial year 2023-24 is not fixed. The Energy Department will decide on this soon.
There are about 58 lakh electricity consumers in Delhi, of which more than 47 lakhs are domestic. In winter, more than 85 percent of consumers get the benefit of a subsidy. The Delhi government had made a provision of Rs 3250 crore for electricity subsidy in the financial year 2022-23.
The energy department is preparing a proposal
The Energy Department of the Delhi Government is preparing a proposal in this regard. Soon this proposal will be sent to the cabinet of the Delhi government for approval. The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission has asked the Energy Department to keep connections with a load of more than three kilowatts out of this purview.
