Waqf Board JPC: Tenure of the committee constituted for Waqf Amendment Bill extended till budget session, proposal passed in Parliament

The tenure of the committee constituted for the Waqf Amendment Bill was extended till the last day of the Budget Session 2025. The Lok Sabha has approved this proposal. Let us tell you that this decision was taken unanimously in the meeting of the committee held on Wednesday. The committee was to submit the report by the end of this week. In the matter, the chairman of the committee Jagdambika Pal says that all the members of the committee agree that the tenure of the JPC should be extended.

The chairman of the committee Jagdambika Pal had said that the report of the committee is almost ready and it will be sent to the House on time. However, the opposition had objections to this. In the committee meeting on Wednesday, opposition members created a ruckus demanding an extension of the tenure of the committee. The opposition members left the meeting midway and went out. Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee said that most of the time on the committee was spent in discussions with people associated with the ruling party and the states which have the most waqf property were not called. After this, the Joint Parliamentary Committee met in the Parliament House Annexe on Wednesday. The MPs who came out after the meeting confirmed that there was a consensus on extending the tenure of the committee.

 

What is the whole matter?

 

On August 8, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the 'Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024' in the Lok Sabha. Along with this, the 'Muslim Waqf (Repeal) Bill, 2024' was also introduced to remove the old inactive act related to it from the papers. The name of the new bill will be the Integrated Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act. Unified Work Management Empowerment Efficient and Development i.e. 'Umeed' in English. This bill was strongly opposed by the opposition. After that on August 9, it was sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee of Parliament for further discussion.
