Grain storage infrastructure in five states including Uttar Pradesh will soon be equipped with state-of-the-art technology. For this, the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) has received a good response from the states. He has received 38 technical applications for 14-grain storage houses from several states. Under this, modern storage houses can be prepared to keep food grains safe with private participation. The technical evaluation of these bids will take three to four weeks, after which the work on this action plan will start.
The department aims to make the FCI warehouses state-of-the-art by 2024. Under this, storage houses of 111.125 lakh metric tonnes capacity will be constructed at 249 places in the country. Storage centers attached to railway stations will be developed with model storage and modern facilities.
In the technical bids of the DBFOT tender under the Hub and Spoke model, 38 bids have been placed for 14 locations in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh in four divided proposals. Which 15 potential parties have come forward, who have shown interest in developing it.
Cereals are kept in two categories. Food grains that are readily available for use and those that go directly from production to storage, from where it is stored. Therefore, proposals were made to build two types of state-of-the-art warehouses i.e. silos for them.
The DFPD supported two types of proposals.
Under the Hub and Spoke model, DFPD has supported two types of proposals. In this, the work of implementation, coordination with other agencies, etc. have been entrusted to the Food Corporation of India.
What is Hub and Spoke Model?
Hub and spoke model is a transportation system. It refers to connecting Spoke to road transport for long-distance transport. A hub is a central location that is equipped with a dedicated railway siding and container depot facility in transport assets, while transport from spoke to the hub is via road and hub to the hub via rail.
This model promotes cost efficiency through bulk storage and movement, utilizing the efficiency of the railway siding. This results in a reduction in cost, maintenance and transportation time. This model simplifies operational complexities apart from economic growth, infrastructure creation, and job creation in the country. In addition, the state-of-the-art warehouse has been declared as a sub-market yard, which brings ease of procurement and reduction in logistics costs for the farmers.
