We strive for better relations with China but..., External Affairs Minister Jaishankar in Washington DC

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said India will continue to maintain relations with China based on "mutual" sensitivity, respect, and interest. Jaishankar made the remarks while responding to a question on Beijing's persistent remarks and how things are "fine" between the two countries.

Jaishankar stressed during a media briefing, "What I have said represents an accurate policy assessment of the state of our relationship." We will continue to strive for a relationship with China, which is built on mutual sensitivity, mutual respect, and mutual interest.

Jaishankar meets US counterpart and other top officials

Minister Jaishankar, who arrived in the US to attend the recently concluded UN General Assembly and is now in Washington, met his US counterpart Antony Blinken and other top officials of the Biden administration.

When asked for his reaction to Weidang's remarks, Jaishankar replied, "I think if any Foreign Ministry spokesperson has anything to say, I would request you to see the comments of the Foreign Ministry spokesperson of the country concerned."

Jaishankar targets China

A few days ago, Jaishankar targeted China without naming it. He spoke at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) session on Ukraine. About Beijing's decision to block the list of terrorists, Jaishankar said, the fight against impunity is vital to the broader effort to achieve peace and justice.

A day after his remarks at the UNSC, Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a brief debate. There was no bilateral meeting between the two foreign ministers.

A similar awkward situation was seen when Prime Minister Narendra Modi stood with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a group photo session at the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, with no exchanges between the two leaders.

After more than two dozen rounds of diplomatic and military talks, India and China withdrew frontline troops from two banks of Pangong Lake, Gogra and Hat Springs. However, there has been no forward motion at other friction points such as Demchok and Depsang.
