America supported India for the reform of the Security Council, Jaishankar said – reform in the UNSC cannot be denied

Nearly eight decades after the founding of the United Nations, almost all countries are agreeing that the UN Security Council should be reformed. Regarding the reform of the Security Council, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the need for reform of the UN Security Council cannot be denied. The UNSC currently has five permanent members – China, the US, France, Russia, and the UK. India is one of the ten non-permanent members. Only the permanent member has the power to veto any motion. In such a situation, now the big question is, how will the powerful Security Council finally expand?

India is trying

India has been trying for many years to reform the Security Council. India's membership has been questioned due to the presence of China with veto power. Jaishankar said that India deserves a place in the Security Council as a permanent member. "We never thought it would be an easy process, but we recognize that the need for reform cannot be denied forever," Jaishankar told a group of Indian journalists in the US on Wednesday. Jaishankar further said that it is not the responsibility of any one country, no matter how powerful it may be. I think it is a collective effort that the members of the United Nations have to make. We are focusing on reform efforts including IGN. India is all set to take on more responsibilities and this cannot be denied forever.

Joe Biden is supporting reform of the Security Council

US President Joe Biden has also advocated for reform of the United Nations. Joe Biden told the General Assembly last week that the Security Council must be reformed and will make the institution more inclusive so that it can better respond to the needs of the world. Joe Biden also insisted on increasing the number of permanent members and non-permanent members. The US had also fully supported India's claim for a permanent seat.

Will India get permanent membership

At present, India is a non-permanent member of the 15-nation United Nations Security Council. In his address to the high-level general debate of the United Nations General Assembly, Jaishankar said that India is ready to take big responsibility. But it has to be ensured that the injustice done to the Global South is addressed decisively. Jaishankar said that during our tenure we discussed some serious issues before the council. We have also focused on concerns such as maritime security, peacekeeping, and counter-terrorism. Significantly, Jaishankar and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres discussed the situation in Ukraine and Myanmar along with the reform of the Security Council during their meeting in New York. Jaishankar met Guterres here on Saturday after addressing the United Nations General Assembly. Jaishankar tweeted- Had a comprehensive discussion on global challenges with UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres.
