There is now one month left for the World Cup to be held in India from October 5. The BCCI is going to announce the Indian team for the tournament on Tuesday (September 5). The onus is on the selectors to pick a team that will make India champions for the third time. Team India has managed to lift the trophy twice in the 12 editions of the World Cup held so far. The Indian team became the winner in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev and in 2011 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The first edition of the World Cup was organized in 1975 on the soil of England. India had lost in their first match against England in this tournament. Sunil Gavaskar batted the entire 60 overs in this match. He returned unbeaten after scoring just 36 runs. In the next match, the team made a comeback by defeating East Africa, but New Zealand defeated them in the third match. After this defeat, the team was out of the World Cup.

1979 world cup

For the second time also the World Cup was held in England. Team India could not win a single match this time. League-round losses against the West Indies, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka saw them bow out of the tournament. The final was contested between England and defending champions West Indies. West Indies once again won the title.

1983 world cup

The World Cup was organized in England for the third time as well. India is being considered weak this time too. The team also had to face defeat in the practice match. Team India had lost to the county team of England in a practice match, but when the main round matches started, the Indian players came in form. In the first match, India defeated West Indies by 34 runs. After this, Zimbabwe was defeated by five wickets. Lost by 162 runs against Australia. West Indies were defeated by 66 runs in the second match. After two consecutive defeats, the team had to win the remaining two matches at any cost. They beat Zimbabwe by 31 runs and Australia by 118 runs to seal their place in the semi-finals. There the team defeated hosts England by six wickets and made it to the final for the first time.

In the final, India faced the challenge of two-time champions West Indies. The win against this team in the league round gave the players confidence that they could beat them in the final as well. Under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, Team India created history by winning this match by 43 runs. The Indian team became the world champion for the first time and the West Indies team missed out on a hat-trick of titles.

1987 world cup
