Bihu Festival 2023 Date: Today i.e. on 14 April 2023, the Bihu festival is being celebrated. This is the main festival of the state of Assam. Every year it is celebrated with great pomp in Assam and some states of the Northeast. The people of the state of Assam celebrate Bihu as New Year. According to the Hindu calendar, this festival is celebrated in the month of Baisakh. And in the Assamese calendar, the month of Baisakh is called 'Bohag'. The bihu festival is also known as Bohag Bihu or Rangoli Bihu. Assam is an agricultural state, where most of the people are also dependent on agriculture. In such a situation, on this day the people of Assam express their gratitude to nature and God for the good yield of crops and celebrate the Bihu festival. When is the festival of Bihu celebrated?

Bihu is celebrated three times a year in Assam, known as Rongali Bihu, Bhogali Bihu, and Kongali Bihu. However, the importance of Rongali Bihu is the highest. It is celebrated every year on 14 and 15 April. Bohag Bihu marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year. This festival signifies the harvesting of crops. Whereas in Punjab, the occasion of harvesting this crop, is celebrated as Baisakhi.

 

This is how Bihu is celebrated

On the day of the Bihu festival, people dance and sing. People wear new clothes and dishes are prepared in homes. Handmade angochas are presented to relatives as a mark of respect. Also on this day, natural beauty is praised through folk songs.

 

The bihu festival is incomplete without dance

Apart from the Bihu festival, the Bihu dance is the famous dance of Assam. It is a group dance, which is organized in a large space like an open field. During this, women, men, children, and youth all dance together.
