A massive explosion rocked the Nowgam police station in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, around 11:20 pm on Friday night. Nine people were killed and 27 others, including over 20 policemen, were injured. The massive fire that ensued burned more than a dozen vehicles parked there. The explosion was so powerful that its sound was heard seven kilometers away in Rajbagh, Old Secretariat, Chanpora, Sanatnagar, Rawalpora, and Pantha Chowk areas.

It is reported that the explosion occurred during sampling of a large cache of explosives recently seized in connection with a white-collar terrorist module case, but this has not been officially confirmed. The explosives seized were ammonium nitrate and NPS.

The white-collar terrorist module of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind was busted in this same police station on October 19th. Following the arrest of two OGWs, an investigation by this police station led to the recovery of 2,900 kg of explosives and a large quantity of weapons in Faridabad.

Police Sealed the Area

Immediately after the explosion, police sealed off the entire area. All roads leading to the site were also blocked. No one was allowed to proceed late into the night. It was unclear whether the entire 2,900 kg of explosives seized were kept at the Nowgam police station or only a small quantity.

Sources said that the Jammu and Kashmir Police seized 360 kg and 2,550 kg of ammonium nitrate and NPS from two hideouts of Dr. Muzammil Ganai, a member of a white-collar terrorist module, in Faridabad. The explosives were reportedly brought to the Nowgam police station. Police have so far arrested nine suspects from this module, including Muzammil.

The injured were admitted to these hospitals.

Ten injured people were taken to Ujala Cygnus Hospital. Additionally, others were admitted to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital and the Army's 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar. The base hospital has been put on alert.

Immediate rescue operations were not possible.

Ambulance and police sirens broke the silence of the night as the injured were taken to the hospital. Due to the continuous small explosions, the bomb disposal squad could not immediately launch a rescue operation.
