The trailer for Director Raghav Dar's original documentary series, Lawrence of Punjab, offers a glimpse into how criminal identities are forged. This upcoming series utilizes the journey of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi as a pivotal case study, examining the interplay between politics, music, ideology, and media propaganda.
What does the trailer reveal?
The series narrates the genesis of a criminal identity through the lenses of culture, institutions, and public perception. Spanning everything from student politics and music to ideology and media narratives, it weaves these elements together to demonstrate how ambition, power, and public sentiment converge to create a modern-day digital syndicate. By centering on Bishnoi as the primary case study, the narrative transcends the confines of a single individual; instead, it broadens its scope to scrutinize the larger cultural and socio-political landscape that fosters such figures—with a particular emphasis on the resulting consequences.
Director Raghav Dar stated, "We always envisioned Lawrence of Punjab as something far more than just a crime story. Our objective was to unravel the 'why' behind the formation of such identities—specifically, the environment, the influences, and the systems that shape them."
Who is Lawrence Bishnoi?
Lawrence Bishnoi is a notorious Indian gangster who rose from the ranks of student politics in Chandigarh to become a prominent figure in organized crime across Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana. Born in 1992 in the Ferozepur district of Punjab, he serves as the ringleader of the Bishnoi gang.
The gang is known for its involvement in extortion, smuggling, and violent crimes, with a network that spans across multiple states. He first captured the nation's attention in 2018 after openly issuing death threats to actor Salman Khan in connection with the blackbuck poaching case. Since then, he has been implicated in numerous cases involving murder, kidnapping, and extortion; he frequently continues to orchestrate his criminal operations from within the confines of his prison cell.
