Who are gig workers? (Who are gig workers)
Gig workers are people who work differently from traditional workers. There are some jobs in every business that can be done by a non-permanent employee instead of a permanent employee. For such work, companies pay employees based on work done. In other words, the employees hired based on payment for work are called gig workers. However, such employees may also remain associated with the company for a long time.
There is an agreement between the employee and the company working as a gig worker. Under this agreement, the employee has to act on the company's call. Based on this work, the company pays the wages to the gig worker. These employees do not get the benefits of social security schemes like salary and allowances etc. of the company like the permanent employees of the company. Most gig workers are relatively young. Their day-to-day working hours are also shorter compared to traditional workers.
According to the NITI Aayog report, about 26.6 lakh gig workers are working in the retail, trade, and sales sectors, while 13 lakh people are working in the transportation sector. Apart from this, 6.3 lakh people are involved in construction and 6.2 lakh people in the insurance and finance sector.
Currently, 47 percent of gig workers are in medium-skill jobs, while 22 percent are in high-skill and 31 percent are in low-skill jobs.
