19 crore people in India struggling with mental illness

Mental health has always been a very serious subject, but it has never received much attention. In December last year, a report from the science journal The Lancet came out. According to this report, by 2017, 19.73 crore people (15% of the total population) in the country were suffering from some form of mental illness. That is, 1 in every 7 Indians is ill. Of these, 4.57 crore are victims of depression and 4.49 crore enzymes.

Fed up with mental illness, 8 lakh people commit suicide every year

WHO figures show that every year 8 lakh people commit suicide due to mental illness. Apart from this, there are thousands of people who try suicide.

Depression is the biggest cause of suicide

Depression and envy are the leading causes of suicide. According to the WHO, more than 26 crore people worldwide are suffering from depression. Depression is the second leading cause of suicide among people aged 15 to 29 years.

Its figures in India are even more shocking. According to the WHO, 16.3 out of every one lakh people in India commit suicide by fighting mental illness. In this case, India is second only to Russia. Out of every 1 lakh people in Russia, 26.5 people commit suicide.

At the same time, according to the National Crime Records Bureau i.e. NCRB, between 2013 and 2018, 52 thousand 526 people committed suicide due to mental illness.

The world economy suffers a loss of 75 lakh crores every year due to depression

Mental illness has an impact not only on our own lives but also on our work, relationships with our friends and relatives, and our social lives. Depression and anxiety are two major diseases that most people suffer from.

According to WHO, every year the world economy suffers a loss of $ 1 trillion or Rs 75 lakh crore due to depression and anxiety. Despite this, governments around the world spend less than 2% of their health budget on mental health.

What system about mental health in our country?

1) Expenditure: In the budget of 2018-19, Rs 50 crore was kept for mental health. Reduced to 40 crores rupees in 2019-20. According to the WHO, in 2017, every Indian had only 4 rupees a year on mental health.

2) Health professionals: According to the National Mental Health Survey 2015-16, there are 9,000 psychiatrists in the country whereas, there are about 700 psychiatrists graduates every year. There are only 0.75 psychiatrists per 1 lakh population in our country, while there should be at least 3 psychiatrists on such a population. Accordingly, there should be 36 thousand psychiatrists in the country.

3) Hospital beds: In our country there is a shortage of not only psychiatrists but also beds. According to the WHO, in 2017 there were 1.4 beds for every 1 lakh population in the mental hospitals of the country, while 7 patients were admitted every year. Whereas, general hospitals have 0.6 beds for every one lakh population and more than 4 patients come every year.

Fear of costly treatment and mockery; The result - people do not get treatment

If someone in our country silently struggles with mental health, there are two reasons. The first is expensive treatment and the second is fun.

According to an estimate, if you are suffering from depression, you have to pay from 1 thousand to 5 thousand rupees for every session of psychiatrist. There are at least three such sessions every month. Apart from the expenses of the session, the cost of medicines is also very high. At the same time, a fee of 3 thousand rupees is charged for each session for enlightenment too.

42.5% of corporate employees are struggling with depression-envy

In 2015, the Associate Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) conducted a survey on corporate employees. 42.5% of the employees surveyed admitted to having suffered from depression or encyclopedias. Not only this, 38.5% of the employees sleep less than 6 hours daily.

According to the WHO, the country's economy is likely to suffer a loss of $ 1 trillion (Rs 75 lakh crore to date) between 2012 and 2030 due to depression and anxiety in the workforce.
