During the Corona period, pharma company Pfizer made vaccines and medicine to save lives. The company made significant gains in the first three months of this year, after which Pfizer has been accused of profiteering. 35 Human Rights campaigners from Global Justice Now, Act-Up London, Just Treatment and Stop AIDS have raised their voices against profiteering.
Tim Bierle of Global Justice Now said – Pfizer refused to share its vaccine technology and other information during the pandemic. Millions of lives could have been saved by doing this. The vaccine company wants to keep the patent at any cost. The company has maintained a monopoly by stopping the global supply of the vaccine. For Pfizer, profits matter more than lives.
Profit increased by 77% from last year
According to reports, Pfizer's total sales in the first quarter of 2022 (January to March) stood at $25.7 billion (Rs 1.96 lakh crore), which is 77% higher than the previous year. Of the total sales, $ 13.2 billion (about one lakh crore rupees) was earned from the Comirneti vaccine made with BioNTech of Germany.
Apart from this, $ 1.5 billion (about Rs 11 thousand crores) was earned from the Paxlovid tablet. The drug was approved in the US in December. The UK and the European Union have also approved it. Pfizer and BioNTech are also seeking approval for the vaccine to be given to children aged six months to four years.
Vaccine companies making a profit
Vaccine companies are making new variants and booster doses a means of earning. Vaccine companies are running arbitrarily around the world by showing fear of Corona. According to an analysis by the People's Vaccination Alliance (PVA), Pfizer made a profit of $ 1 thousand every second in 2021.
According to the report of the British newspaper The Guardian, it costs Pfizer 1 dollar i.e. about 75 rupees to prepare a dose of the vaccine. The company sells it for $30. Countries like the UK are buying Pfizer's vaccine by paying 30 times more.
Pfizer says that the price of the vaccine dose is logical. It costs as much as a plate of food in high-income countries, half a plate of food in middle-income countries, and the cost of a vaccine in low-income countries.
