Amid rising cases of black fungus, another disease in the country, AIIMS director Dr. Randeep Guleria said that the prevalence of fungal infections seen in Covid patients has increased at present. Dr. Randeep Guleria further stated that due to uncontrolled diabetes and being infected with corona, the risk of mucormycosis may increase.

'Increased risk due to overuse of steroids

Apart from this, he also said that under this second wave of the corona the use of steroids became very high. He further stated that the given steroids can cause other infections even if the mild and incipient disease is not indicated. If people are given high doses of steroids after the symptoms are not present, they may have an increased risk of high blood sugar levels and mucormycosis.

Ways to prevent black fungus

On the increasing cases of black fungus, Dr. Randeep Guleria said that we have to work on ways to prevent it. Dr. Randeep Guleria has presented three important facts for everyone to avoid black fungus. They told that good control of blood sugar level, those who are on steroids, check their blood sugar level daily and keep in mind when to give steroids and how many doses to be given.

Do not believe false claims

Dr. Randeep Guleria said that many false claims about black fungus are being spread that this is happening by eating raw food but there is no data to confirm this. At the same time, it has nothing to do with the use of oxygen. This is also happening among people living in Yehom Isolation.

Symptoms of black fungus

Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman of Medanta, said that the first symptoms in mucormycosis of a Covid patient are pain, stuffiness in the nose, swelling on the cheeks, patches of fungus inside the mouth, and swelling in the eyelids. This requires strict medical treatment. He further stated that the key to controlling black fungus is to use judicious steroids and control blood sugar levels.
